Background Information
Greenland resembles an ice-filled bowl rimmed by coastal ranges. In the centre, the thick ice overburden has depressed the ground surface to 1,200 ft (366 m) below sea level. The total population is 50,000 of which 10,000 inhabit the capital, Godthaab. Fishery resources provide the basis of the economy. In 1980 the total fish catch was 90,000 tonnes, consisting mostly of codfish and shrimp. Other catches include halibut, catfish and salmon.
