Nepal. A woman from a village near Tansen

A woman from a village near Tansen carries her spade back from volunteer work for the widening of the 65-km footpath into a jeep track linking Tansen to Tamghas in the hilly area north of Lumbini zone. - - Self-help Work in the Hills of Nepal. The UN/FAO World Food Programme (WFP) is currently assisting Nepal, one of the Least Developed Countries lying landclocked between India and Tibet, with about US$40 million worth of food aid. One WFP project, costing about US$3.5 million, involves the distribution of 6,900 tons of wheat or maize, 480 tons of dried skim milk, 360 tons of edible oil and 480 tons of pulses as an incentive to volunteer workers who are providing 2,400,000 days of labour for the construction of 500 kms of mule trails andjeep tracks over a period of five years. Begun in 1977, the project is being executed by the Local Development Department of the Ministry of Home and Panchayat. Its aim is to relieve the inhabitants' isolation and their difficult living conditions. The unskilled workers are engaged in construction of three mule trails and one jeep track linking their community with the adjoininig one. Each volunteer gets five rations for each day worked.
