Background Information The Government's programme for post-war reconstruction and development includes the restoration of war-devastated provinces and the establishment of new economic zones. The aim is to restructure the social and economic pattern of the country and to assist in the development of forest areas, large-scale cooperative farms and plantations. One of the zones chosen for rehabilitation and reforestation is the region of Da Lat in the Lam Dong province where an area of 300,000 ha. has been found suitable and is reserved for pine plantations. UN/FAO World Food Programme assistance was requested by the Government and was approved by WFP for an original period of two years. The short-term objectives of the WFP project include the provision of adequate diets to local inhabitants returning following the war, the creation of employment in the forest sector and the training of workers. WFP rations include wheat flour, edible oil, canned meat and fish, sugar and edible fat.
