Distribution of bread and cheese and dried fruit
Undated photo - Distribution of bread and cheese and dried fruit out children of the Camp Fouquereaux primary School at Floràȡl. - - Primary school Feeding and Feeding of Vulnerable Groups.. In the small Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius and Rdrigez, a mixed Indian/Chinese/African population of 400,000 people lives in an area of 1,865 square km. The economy is largely based on the sugar crop which represents 945% of visible exports. In the poorer areas, where there is much seasonal and permanent unemployment, malnutrition and ill health amongst children is a serious problem. The UN/FAO World Food Programme(WFP) has established two projects to help the Government to improve nutrition standards. One is to provide 20,000 pregnant and nursing mothers and 50,000 preschool children with a daily ration of dried skim milk and wheat flour at a total cost to WFP during this three-year project of $2,73 million. The second is a school-feeding project for five years during which a daily snack of bread and cheese, dried fruits and a glass of milk is given to some 124,000 primary school children at a cost to WFP of $5,565,000, This includes most of the islandàchool population.
