8 JANUARY 2024
FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and HE. Mr Thammanat Prompao, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives of the Kingdom of Thailand, met on January 8th during the Director-General’s first of a three-day visit to Bangkok.
The Director-General thanked the Thai Government for its long-standing commitment and strong support to FAO. Particularly, the Director-General expressed his appreciation to Thailand for hosting the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific over the past 70 years.
The Director-General emphasized the importance of working jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives as the window ministry to FAO, in supporting farmers, promoting rural development, boosting well-being, and protecting the environment.
After the meeting QU planted a tree at a Royal Forestry Department site in Bang Kachao, a green space within Bangkok and sometimes referred to as the city’s green lung given its mangroves and canals. The tree, called Magnolia Champaca Baill, is a high-value species which grows mainly in wet tropical biomes. QU also took a soil sample from the area, which has mangroves and other plants interspersed with canals.
FAO Director-General QU Dongyu then visited Thailand’s Land Development Department (LDD) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, underlining the country’s key role as a proponent of sustainable soil management in the Asia and Pacific region.
At the Land Development Department, steward of Thailand’s Soil Museum, the Director-General examined various types of soil. Among those receiving him were Pramote Yajai, Director-General of LDD, Arthit Sukhkasem, Deputy Director-General for Academic Affairs and Anuwat Pothinam, Deputy Director-General for Operations at LDD.
9 JANUARY 2024
FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and H.E. Srettha Thavisin, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, met on January 9th during the Director-General’s second of three-day visit to Bangkok.
The Director-General expressed his sincere appreciation to the Thai government for hosting the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific since 1953, and the pair agreed to continue working together on joint actions to ensure effective delivery and to further strengthen collaboration in the future.
The Director-General provided an overview of the flagship FAO Hand-in-Hand Initiative and the FAO Green Cities Initiative, and highlighted the important support provided by the late King of Thailand for the establishment of World Soil Day celebrated annually since 5 December 2014, to commemorate the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej – a renowned soil scientist, as well the International Year of Soil held in 2015.
After the meeting, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu visited the FAO Reference Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) hosted by the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand’s oldest higher education institution.
During QU’s visit, the Faculty of Veterinary Science was formally renewed as FAO Reference Center for AMR for another four years.
In his welcoming remarks, Professor Bundhit Eua-arporn, President of Chulalongkorn University, described the global rise in Antimicrobial Resistance as posing a significant threat, with drug resistant infections impacting the health of animals and plants, reducing agricultural productivity and threatening food security.
During his visit, QU participated in the collection of specimen samples, the preparation of samples for testing, and the analysis of laboratory results.
The centre hosted by Chulalongkorn University currently serves as the only FAO Reference Centre on AMR in Asia and the Pacific region, and one of only nine worldwide.
The Director-General then visited the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, where he met with staff and visited the facilities.
In the evening of the second day of his official visit to the country, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu had a Royal Audience with His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun and Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajarasudha Bimollaksana of the Kingdom of Thailand. FAO Director-General QU Dongyu is the first UN Principal to have an Audience with Their Majesties since His Majesty the King ascended to the throne in 2016.
10 JANUARY 2024
On January 10th, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu visited the Talaad Thai wholesale food market, the biggest in Southeast Asia, and Thailand's Fisheries Monitoring Center (FMC) as he wrapped up his three-day trip to Thailand.
The Talaad Thai wholesale food market outside Bangkok is the biggest in Southeast Asia. Here the FAO Director-General was welcomed by the owner Pradit Phataraprasit, who is also President of the Thai Agricultural Wholesale Market Association.
The FAO Director-General toured the market areas devoted to export and import of fruit and vegetables and observed the functioning of produce certification and the use of QR codes for traceability. He also visited the quality testing lab for fruit and vegetables.
Concluding his official visit to the country, the Director-General toured the Thailand's Fisheries Monitoring Center (FMC). In response to welcoming remarks by Mr Bancha Sukkaew, Deputy Director of the Department of Fisheries of Thailand, QU paid tribute to Thailand’s achievements in regulating its fisheries in recent years, and also emphasized the crucial role of aquaculture in meeting the region’s food needs.
