Video Message By Dr QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General
19 May 2024
Excellencies
Ladies and Gentlemen,
1. Today, the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) celebrates one hundred years!
2. Collaboration with FAO goes back to the early days of the establishment of our Organization almost 80 years ago.
3. Ever since, we have jointly pioneered global initiatives on the sustainable management of
soil resources.
4. The FAO and UNESCO "Soil Map of the World" was launched following a recommendation from the 7th IUSS Congress in 1961.
5. In the 1980s, we jointly created the World Reference Base for Soil Resources.
6. With advances in remote sensing and geographic information systems, we worked together on the World Soil and Terrain Database.
7. In 2011, recognizing the crucial role of soils in food security and ecosystem services, FAO
led the establishment of the Global Soil Partnership,
8. And the IUSS has been with us every step of the way by providing scientific support to many of the Partnership’s activities.
9. Our joint work in producing timely science is critical to finding the solutions needed to restore and remediate our soils.
10. To help advance sustainable soil management around the world, FAO will hold the Global Symposium on Soil Information and Data in Nanjing, China, in September,
11. And following the celebrations for World Soil Day in December, FAO will also organize the International Soil and Water Forum next December in Bangkok, Thailand.
12. I thank the IUSS community for your ongoing commitment and look forward to continuing working together to bring our soils back to full health for better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life, leaving no one behind.
13. Thank you.
