Video Message By Dr QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General
22 May 2024
1. Biodiversity is the potential of food diversity in the future.
2. It is what we farm, catch, harvest, and cultivate.
3. It is what supports our food network – from pollinators to micro-organisms in our soils.
4. It is what prospers livelihoods of farmers, forest managers and dwellers, fishers, livestock keepers and pastoralists across the world.
5. FAO supports the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework - the Biodiversity Plan.
6. By supporting agricultural practices that safeguard biodiversity and enhance ecosystem resilience, FAO is supporting food producers to be the guardians of biodiversity.
7. By supporting Members in minimizing the climate impact of global agrifood systems, FAO is helping to reduce a key driver of biodiversity loss and protecting vulnerable rural communities.
8. By partnering with governments, civil society and the private sector, FAO is helping mainstream biodiversity across the food and agricultural sectors, across policies and programmes, and to conserve valuable genetic resources.
9. We must all work together in an efficient, effective, and coherent manner to protect and restore biodiversity, reduce food insecurity and poverty, and transform global agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient, and more sustainable,
10. For better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life leaving no one behind.
11. Let us all play our part in the Biodiversity Plan!
12. Thank you.
