At a women-led cooperative in Samandağ city of southern Türkiye, a group of women is busy cutting peppers, labelling jars filled with pickles and packing them into boxes to be sold at the local market.
When a devastating earthquakes struck Türkiye in 2023, the Women's Initiative Business Cooperative suffered significant losses, the building was heavily damaged, some cooperative members died, while others were displaced.
SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Atiye Sönmez Erdoğdu, president of Samandağ Women's Initiative Business Cooperative:
"We lived through an earthquake on Feb 6 and lost ninety percent of our city. We lost relatives. All of our women are affected by trauma, and not just our women. We are going through a painful time as a community."
The cooperative resumed production eight months later after the devastated earthquake with the support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). With the machinery and equipment provided by FAO, the women-led cooperative received the help they needed to rebuild and recover.
The cooperative, operational since 2020, was founded by a member of the local city council, Atiye Sönmez Erdoğdu. For women in the community, the cooperative provided more than just a source of income, it offered a sense of community and empowerment, particularly during the post-quake period.
SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Atiye Sönmez Erdoğdu, president of Samandağ Women's Initiative Business Cooperative:
"The women come to the cooperative from these tents, and heal as they speak to each other and engage in producing. They chat and socialize. In the evening as they leave, they put some spending money in their pockets, take their daily pay and contribute to their own economies. They go to their houses, tents or container homes with their hands full. And therefore, we contribute to their healing, economically, socially and psychologically."
Çiğdem Kurdet is one of the cooperative's 25-member production team. Raised in a household where women were discouraged from working outside the home, Çiğdem had never experienced financial independence. After she got married, she was a homemaker and mother, taking care of her three children.
SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Çiğdem Kurdet, member of Samandağ Women's Initiative Business Cooperative:
"I got money in my pocket for the first time with the cooperative. Otherwise, I was not working."
Çiğdem learnt to make jams, pickles, spice mixes and tomato paste from a class she took at the cooperative.
Çiğdem became the sole breadwinner in her family after her husband lost his job after the earthquake, she is able to support her family with the income earned from the cooperative.
FAO supports six women-led cooperatives in the earthquake-hit region as part of a three-year Earthquake response and recovery plan (ERRP), though FAO’s support for women’s economic activities in the country spans beyond earthquake-stricken areas.
According to TURKSTAT data, two-thirds of the most vulnerable and 90 percent of the extreme poor in Türkiye live in rural areas. FAOSTAT indicates approximately 5 million people work in the agricultural sector, 41 percent of whom are women. Women working informally in agriculture are 98.3 percent (TURKSTAT).
SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Neşe Çakır Saylan, Gender specialist, FAO Türkive:
"Unfortunately, in many countries like Türkiye, women and men are not equal, especially in rural areas. We can say that women are behind the man. So our principle is leave no one behind. We are trying to support vulnerable women."
Through the "Leaving no one behind" project, FAO is investing in women to promote income-generating activities, thus contributing to rural development.
Overall, in Türkiye, the organization supports 22 women-led cooperatives with the aim of fostering women's empowerment not only economically but also socially.
SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Neşe Çakır Saylan, Gender specialist, FAO Türkive:
"FAO Türkiye started a women led cooperative program, we can say a cooperative program, and this is very important for women because in the leadership in the decision making processes, women's participations are very few, very less".
This is the case for the fishnet weavers of Konacık harbor, for example, who were helping their husbands and doing their jobs without payment. FAO trained them to invest in their capabilities and find new economic opportunities.
SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Fikriye Şeyma Uçar, fishnet weaver:
"We began doing this work to help our spouses, not to make money. There were twenty women learning how to weave fishnets in the courses. We can expand this and be of financial support to our spouses."
On 8 March 2024, International Women's Day will be celebrated under the theme "Invest in women: Accelerate progress."
FAO supports investing in rural women to boost livelihoods and food security.
The “Leaving No One Behind: Greater Involvement and Empowerment of Rural Women in Türkiye and Central Asia” project is funded by the Government of Türkiye under the FAO-Türkiye Partnership Programme on Food and Agriculture (FTPP II). The overall objective is to provide policy support, capacity development and knowledge generation in order to accelerate gender equality and rural women’s economic empowerment, reduce rural poverty, and empower rural communities and organizations to access productive resources, services and markets.
