Background Information

Recurring shocks, such as extreme drought conditions, have reduced people's ability to recover their income and food security. To support the most vulnerable families, FAO is implementing the Transitional Liquidity and Livelihoods Program so they can overcome repeated challenges and have a stable basis for future investments. So far, the project has supported 13, 292 agro-pastoral families in 15 districts of the region with cash transfers of more than $6 million. Additionally, 322 village savings and loan associations have been created to promote financial inclusion and greater empowerment to achieve their long-term business goals. To complement this, 262 nutrition champions have been trained to ensure people can maintain a healthy diet. With this support, people are better able to manage the burden of repeated hardships so they can create a sustainable future through community-led approaches.
