Background Information
Artificial habitats were introduced as a fishing gear to harvest spiny lobster in the late 1960s. Local fishers then self-organized with a system of individual marine plots, formalized internally by the fishing cooperatives. Their management has been a successful organizational scheme and has proven the sustainability of the fishery.
