Background Information
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) project, entitled "Emergency livelihood support for drought-affected rural populations", aimed to provide 6 200 drought-affected rural households with emergency cash and livelihood support to enable them to meet their basic needs. The project also aimed to provide households with sustained access to nutritious food by boosting production and protecting livelihood assets. The project's agriculture component targeted the most vulnerable farming households in Dolow district, Gedo region and Kismayu dstrict, Lower Shabelle region. Each household received an agricultural input kit adapted for riverine households that included drought-tolerant crop seeds (20 kg of maize, 10 kg of cowpea and 12 kg of mung bean) for household food security; 100 kg of urea fertilizer and 240 g of assorted vegetable seeds to support dietary diversification; tools (one hoe and one forked hoe); hermetic storage bags (30 pieces); and irrigation hours (up to three cycles, 18 hours total). The kit enabled households to produce their own food, earn an income and use the crop residues as fodder for livestock. The farmers also received training on good agricultural practices and nutrition to maximize yields and reduce post-harvest losses including climate-smart practices. Households also received cash transfers disbursed over three months valued at USD 75 per month in Dollow (Gedo) and USD 70 in Kismayu (Lower Juba).
