Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am so pleased to address you today.
Wholesale markets are a key leverage point for transforming agrifood systems to achieve inclusive economic prosperity, human well-being and planetary health.
We live in a world where 673 million people face hunger, 2.3 billion are food insecure, and 2.6 billion lack access to healthy diets - thereby contributing to the triple burden of malnutrition.
Urban areas host more than half of the world’s population and account for more than three-quarters of the world’s food-insecure people.
Wholesale food markets are crucial hubs that connect farmers and food producers to retailers and other businesses, and are critical for resilient and sustainable development of urban and peri-urban areas.
They facilitate the supply of fresh products and reduce the cost of nutritious foods, thereby improving food security and nutrition; and are socio-economic development engines.
FAO has a long history of supporting Members in developing wholesale food markets by, among others:
strengthening regulatory frameworks for food quality and safety standards;
leveraging innovations, such as digital technologies, to improve bulk packaging and logistics operations; and
implementing tools for measuring food loss and waste.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We need win-win solutions for people and the planet, that are inclusive and consider the needs of vulnerable groups, and are also environmentally friendly.
FAO values its longstanding collaboration with the World Union of Wholesale Markets, and I am pleased that over the past few years we have increased our collaboration on awareness-raising and advocacy for food loss and waste reduction.
We look forward to further strengthening our partnership to collectively support the transformation of global agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable,
And achieve the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life - leaving no one behind.
I wish you a successful and productive conference.
Thank you.
