Background Information On 20 February, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) delivered animal feed in northern Gaza for the first time since the escalation of hostilities in October 2023. On that day, 36.5 metric tons of animal feed were distributed to 146 families with livestock in Gaza City, and 51.1 metric tons were delivered to 980 families in Deir al Balah. In February 2025, FAO has been serving an average of 200 families per day. Since the ceasefire came into force, FAO has distributed a total of 818.8 metric tons of animal feed concentrate to around 2 400 Gazan herders.

Since April 2024, we have provided over 1000 tonnes of barley feed to virtually all of Gaza’s 4 800 herders with small ruminants, distributed, 68.35 tonnes to 459 donkey owners in Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah, and 3.1 metric tons to the two operating commercial poultry farms in Deir al-Balah and Nuseirat.
