Ladies and Gentlemen,

1. Coffee is more than just a beverage.
2. It represents the main source of revenue for millions of people around the world, and plays a vital role in the global economy.
3. The sector contributes to reducing extreme poverty, ending hunger, achieving gender equality, ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, and promoting sustainable practices.
4. For many low-income countries, coffee is a source of much needed foreign currency that helps to cover food import bills and to access a variety of goods and services from the world markets.
5. For major coffee importing countries, the coffee industry provides employment, value addition and tax revenues.
6. Despite major progress over the last decades, the coffee sector is at the crossroads of several complex and interconnected challenges.
7. The food security and climate crises, the rising cost of living, conflicts and increasing trade fragmentation create a difficult context for the coffee sector to develop and flourish.
8. Solutions to overcome these challenges require a multilateral and multifaceted approach.
9. The climate crisis is one of the most daunting challenges facing the sector because it needs very specific agro-ecological conditions.
10. Frequent droughts, erratic rains, frosts, as well as rising temperatures affect production and the quality of the beans.
11. The impacts of the climate crisis also contribute to the increased spread of emerging pests and diseases.
12. Suitable coffee-growing regions are shifting, with changing weather patterns impacting coffee yields, quality and productivity.
13. By 2050, it is estimated that about half of the land currently used for coffee production could become unsuitable.
14. Farmers are adopting various strategies to cope with these changes such as shifting to higher altitudes, diversifying crops and implementing shade management practices to protect coffee plants from extreme weather.
15. Innovation is key to facing these challenges. There has been wide consensus on this during the discussions at this Summit.
16. Innovation requires investing in the next generation breeding strategies that can help accelerate the development of more climate-resilient and adaptive coffee cultivars.
17. It also requires exploring a whole range of impactful innovations and promoting cutting-edge technologies, including precision agriculture, data analytics, Artificial Intelligence and blockchain, biotechnologies and all other modern technologies.
18. Improving the efficient use of inputs – seeds, fertilizers, pesticides – as well as soil nutrient mapping, soil improvement and water treatment technologies, are all effective solutions to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis and boost the resilience of the sector.
19. This must be accompanied by boosting investment in infrastructure, post-harvest treatment, market access, and equipping coffee farmers with the required technical and financial support.
Ladies and gentlemen,
20. Innovation has been the major theme of this Summit.
21. From new technologies to climate-smart practices, the potential is vast.
22. Yet, their success requires a holistic approach, integrating science and technology with governance and finance.
23. FAO advocates for policies and strategies that promote sustainable practices, while ensuring economic viability and social acceptance.
24. Inclusivity is key, which means empowering smallholder farmers – including women, youth and indigenous peoples – through innovative and financial solutions, while also building on traditional farming systems.
25. Transformation of the coffee global value chain will be essential for addressing income disparities, reducing inequalities, and promoting the long-term well-being of all actors in the sector.
26. The path ahead may be challenging, but I am confident that through collaboration and solidarity, we can meet our collective goal.
27. Last month, the FAO Committee on Commodity Problems endorsed a proposal by Brazil to establish an International Coffee Day on the 1st of October each year.
28. This important initiative provides a strong foundation for future efforts.
29. As you conclude this important Summit, I congratulate you and encourage you to continue to strengthen partnerships, foster dialogue, and work towards a thriving coffee sector for future generations.
