Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Colleagues,
1. Universal access to clean and reliable energy is a critical aspect of sustainable development and global food security.
2. Feeding a growing population requires a radical transformation in how food is produced, processed, traded and consumed.
3. We need to produce more with less.
4. Energy is needed at every stage of the agrifood system.
5. We need to imagine a world where millions of families cook their food with clean energy,
6. To slow down the impacts of climate change, drive gender equality, reduce poverty, and bring health benefits to all.
7. Currently, we live in a world where the number of hungry people is rising, yet millions of tonnes of food are wasted.
8. It is estimated that 12% of global total food production is lost due to lack of effective refrigeration systems.
9. Reducing food loss and waste is key to ensuring food security,
10. And for this reason, FAO recognizes that climate change, energy, and food security are closely connected.
11. This interlinkage is at the core of FAO’s Programme on Energy-Smart Agrifood Systems, which aims to provide greater access to reliable and affordable green energy solutions for all.
12. FAO is supporting countries to transform their agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable,
13. And ensuring a sustainable and just energy transition is key to this transformation.
14. As we celebrate this second International Day of Clean Energy, let us commit to increasing clean energy investments in agrifood systems to ensure a clean energy future for all,
15. And to support the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life - leaving no one behind.
16. Thank you.
