Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Friends,
I am pleased to join you in celebrating
the 100th Anniversary of the Ocean University of China.
This centennial milestone is not only a testament to your institution's dedication
to excellence in education and research, but also to your valuable contribution
to marine science and innovation, sustainable resource management
and to fisheries and aquaculture – all supporting global food security,
improved livelihoods and economic development.
Over the past century, the Ocean University of China has emerged as a world leader
in marine studies, significantly advancing our understanding of oceans and their ecosystems.
At FAO we share a common vision to promote sustainable development
across agriculture, and fisheries and aquaculture.
Our mutual commitment to development and sustainability is more important
than ever as we face unprecedented challenges due to the climate crisis,
biodiversity loss, and the environment deteriorating.
We must ensure that our agrifood systems are transformed to be more efficient,
more inclusive, more resilient, and more sustainable.
We must produce more with less.
The FAO Blue Transformation initiative calls for efficient, inclusive, resilient
and sustainable aquatic food systems which are productive and equitable for all.
This Initiative was endorsed at the G20 Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting in Brazil in September, 2024.
Their successful implementation can only be achieved through best practices,
innovative solutions, and international collaboration.
Dear Colleagues,
FAO is firmly dedicated to enhancing the sustainability of a growing aquaculture,
recognizing its potential to contribute to food security and rural development.
Strengthened collaboration between FAO and the Ocean University of China
paves the way for future projects and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Together, by combining our expertise, we can explore groundbreaking strategies
that can drive impactful innovation, and develop better practices that benefit
both local and global communities, producers and consumers.
Together, we can achieve the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition,
a better environment and a better life - leaving no one behind.
As we celebrate the remarkable journey of the Ocean University of China over the past century,
let us reaffirm our commitment to working together towards a better second centennial.
Congratulations to you all for your dedication and achievements.
Let us be closer with our partnership for a better world.
Thank you.
