Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Colleagues,
1. I am pleased to welcome you to FAO Headquarters and to open the 2024 Annual Conference with the theme: "Empowering People: Humanizing HR & Imagining Possibilities."
2. Strategic HR Management is increasingly critical in international organizations, as current global challenges require us to effectively leverage the skills, experience and capacities of our workforce to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness needed for deliverables.
3. HR is an unlimited capital for us to manage our organizations to achieve our goals and fulfill our respective mandates.
4. Humanizing HR by prioritizing the human aspect of our employees is key to unlocking their full potential.
5. By creating a more empathetic, kind, inclusive and supportive working environment that values employees’ development, personal experiences and well-being,
6. And that promotes dignity and respect, is an essential step towards ensuring that our organizational goals are aligned with a people-centric approach.
7. The topic of this conference is also important as Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping our societies, economies and workplaces.
8. In this context, we need to analyze how AI is impacting our organizational culture and transforming the way we work.
9. We need to harness the potential of AI in a responsible and ethical way, to keep our workforce empowered and engaged.
10. At FAO, we are already witnessing the transformative power of digital technologies.
11. Using new technologies in our work such as satellite imaging, remote sensors, mobile and blockchain applications, and big data analysis, supports digital agriculture to support the transformation of global agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable,
12. For the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life for all – leaving no one behind.
13. It is now time to harness the potential of AI to transform not only agrifood systems and rural development, but also the way we work within our organizations.
14. As we face global challenges, our workforce remains at the heart of FAO's Strategic Framework 2022-31.
15. Our success is built on the talent, dedication, dynamic and innovation of our employees.
16. Our goal is to foster a dynamic, respectful, inclusive, and high-performing culture, ensuring that we have the right people in the right roles at the right time.
17. By embracing the digital transformation across our business processes and knowledge management, in our collaboration across sectors and with partner, we will ensure that FAO remains future-ready and fit-for-purpose.
18. AI is a tool to empower people and in the field of HR, AI presents exciting possibilities, for example by automating routine tasks to free up time for HR teams to focus on more strategic priorities such as talent development, employee engagement, and nurturing a culture of belonging and innovation.
19. However, AI must be designed and implemented with a focus on enhancing, not replacing, human capabilities.
20. While AI can enhance efficiency and traceability, it can never replace human intuition, empathy, and judgment that are essential in areas like recruitment, employee well-being, and organizational culture.
21. We must take a human-centered approach in designing and implementing AI, ensuring it remains transparent and accountable, and that it promotes diversity and inclusion.
22. At FAO, we are committed to ensuring equity and transparency in the use of AI. In this regard, we are proud to have been one of the first organizations to sign the Rome Call for AI Ethics in December 2019, an initiative endorsed by the Holy Father and signed by FAO, IBM, Microsoft, and the Holy See.
23. In which we affirmed our commitment to an AI that respects the dignity of the human person, to the benefit of all.
24. I wish you a productive and insightful conference, and look forward to your collective thoughts for a better workplace for all, based on the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
25. Thank you.
