AUSTRALIA 2024. FAO Director-General's Official Travel
31 October 2024, Bellarine peninsula, Australia. FAO Director-General QU Dongyu visiting Knewleave Partnership, a 400-hectare sheep and cattle farm on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula. Operated by Fiona Conroy and Cam Nicholson, the farm is very focussed on sustainability and productivity. It makes strong use of measurements to inform evidence-based decision making, including soil tests, measuring pasture growth and stock performance.
Farm emissions are managed through genetics, herd management and carbon sequestration. The farm has had success in increasing soil carbon by growing productive perennial pastures, promoting pasture growth with fertiliser and practising rotational grazing. Soil testing enables charting of soil carbon.
The farm provides an example of how Australian livestock producers can reduce their environmental footprint while pursuing productivity
