Excellences, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Colleagues,
1. Forestry is vital for sustaining and transforming agrifood systems and it is integral to water and food security.
2. It is essential for biodiversity and a functioning ecosystem.
3. Its contribution to agrifood systems and human wellbeing will be the foundation of your discussions this week,
4. as you consider how to further strengthen the linkages between crops and forestry in support of the transformation of global agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable.
5. Today is also the official launch of the 2024 State of the World’s Forests.
6. This FAO flagship report shows that to meet the projected increase in demand for wood products may require an additional 1 billion cubic metres or more of industrial roundwood by 2050.
7. Moreover, nearly 6 billion people use non-timber forest products worldwide.
8. In response to these demands for forest products and services, we need innovative solutions and science for evidence-based decision-making.
9. The report presents promising developments, ranging from new technologies, creative and successful policies, institutional changes, and innovative finance.
10. We are working to help drive innovation in forestry.
11. We are developing innovative finance solutions for smallholder farmers, foresters and forest-dependent people.
12. We are promoting forest-based green economy, including by strengthening sustainable value-added chain development and public–private partnerships.
13. And the FAO Forestry Roadmap “From Vision to Action 2024-31” will further strengthen our work in forestry and support Members in addressing global challenges.
14. The roadmap highlights FAO’s dual emphasis on the protective and productive functions of forests, as well as the role of innovation in shaping the future of the world’s forest sector.
15. To achieve this will also require, among others, enabling policies, robust partnerships, increased investment, and a cross-sector approach.
16. The recommendations arising from your discussions will further support our collective efforts to achieve the Global Forest Goals, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,
17. Through the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life – leaving no one behind.
18. I wish you a fruitful and successful COFO 27!
19. Thank you.
