Background Information
Only small areas of the Lebanon are flat enough for arable farming, and in these areas agriculture is well developed. But the stage has been reached where irrigation is necessary for the further raising of productivity. To assist with the introduction of irrigated farming, FAO is carrying out a Soil Survey and Related Irrigation Scheme Project with financial support from the UN Development Program (Special Fund). Reconnaissance soil surveys are being Carried out, while 150,000 hectares are being studied in detail and soil maps drawn up. Six experimental stations have been established. Among the work at these stations are the following activities: Tests with different quantities and types of fertilizers and with different quantities of irrigation water: soil permeability and soil moisture content studies; studies of water requirements of different crops; pot experiments using different soils; observations with evapotranspirometer and demonstration of modern irrigation techniques.
