TANZANIA 1966. Freedom from Hunger campaign project
TANZANIA, August 1966. At Musoma, on the south east shore of Lake Victoria, a training centre for women and girls has been built with funds from the Swedish International Development Authority, as a gift under the Freedom from Hunger Campaign. The project will ultimately be valued at approximately $1 million. Its purpose is to train girls and women in rural home economics so that they can better carry out the tasks in their homes and fields. Some will become instructors for village women and will help raise the standard of rural living. Sewing is an obviously valuable skill in a developing country; but it is also a form of community development, say the Musoma teachers. Learning something new in a group develops a spirit of inquiry, encouraging women to find new and better waysof doing other things together to improve their lives and community.
