Ecuador, 1966. As part of its land reform, the Government of Ecuador, assisted by FAO and the Technical Assistance section of the UN Development Programme, is carrying out a colonisation project on two experimental farms in the Andes: the Hacienda of San Vicente de Pusir and the Hacienda Pesillo. San Vicente de Pusir covers 10,000 hectares where 300 families of formerly landless peasants have settled and are gradually given titles of property. The Hacienda is organized as a cooperative. FAO experts live on these farms, others work at the project headquarters in Quito.
