Background Information
An estimated area of 9,000,000 hectares in Tunisia is held to be productive, but of this only about 3,400,000 hectares are arable and the returns are generally poor. Following the Government's request for UN Development Programme assistance, a 5-year project commenced in 1967 with FAO as the executing agency. Experiments and demonstrations on the various activities of the project include the production of forage crops, animals, fruit trees, the development of irrigation, the mechanization of agriculture, and related farm economic studies. The project headquarters are in Tunis and four experimental and demonstration centres have been established in different areas of the country providing a contrast in topographic and climatic conditions.
