SAO TOME E PRINCIPE
06 June 2025. Neves, Sao Tome e Principe. A worker stands on sacks of cocoa beans at the farm of Diogo Vaz company.
The project “Landscape Restoration for Ecosystem Functionality and Climate Change Mitigation in the Republic of Sao Tome and Principe (STP)” is part of the framework programme of The Restoration Initiative (TRI) and is known by the acronym TRI-STP.
The Restoration Initiative is implemented globally by FAO, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
TRI-STP is implemented by FAO with government, the private sector, farmer cooperatives and other partners.
A key focus of the project is the enhancement of cocoa production through agroforestry. The project supports sustainable cocoa farming through improved agroforestry techniques, organic and fair-trade certifications, and cooperative strengthening. By integrating
cocoa production with reforestation efforts, the initiative helps increase farmers' incomes while restoring ecosystems, preventing soil erosion, and maintaining biodiversity.
STP’s agroforestry cocoa production by cooperatives was recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Site in 2024.
