Background Information
Women in Afghanistan play a vital role in agriculture, often managing household farms and cultivating essential crops. They contribute significantly to food production and family livelihoods, despite facing cultural and economic barriers. Their knowledge of traditional farming practices and local ecosystems is invaluable for sustainable agriculture. Empowering women in this sector can enhance food security and strengthen communities across the country.
Tahera is one of the hardworking farmers who received a certified wheat seed package from FAO, which includes 50 kg of certified wheat seed, 50 kg of urea fertilizer, and 50 kg of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer, along with training in good agricultural practices. With this support, farmers like Tahera have increased their yields by nearly one-third per jerib (0.2 hectares), gaining an average of 360 kg more wheat. The benefits extend beyond the initial harvest, as the high-quality seeds continue to boost yields for up to three years. Farmers also benefit from surplus straw, which can be sold for additional income or used as fodder for livestock.
This photo album captures the journey of wheat from harvest to baking bread, highlighting Tahera's dedicated efforts alongside her family. Their hard work has finally paid off with a bountiful harvest, allowing them to feed their family throughout the entire year.
