Script Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to address you on the UN Day for South-South Cooperation, and I wish to thank the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics for convening this important webinar.

This year’s theme “New Opportunities and Innovation through South-South and Triangular Cooperation” captures the spirit of collaboration and innovation that drives sustainable development across the Global South.

Since 1970, FAO has been at the forefront of South-South and Triangular Cooperation.

We have supported more than 100 countries exchange solutions and technologies to meet the challenges of the climate crisis, food insecurity, and resilient agricultural development.

I commend the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics for launching its Center of Excellence for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture earlier this year.

These platforms help bridge geographical and institutional divides, and accelerate the transfer of validated, locally adapted and scalable solutions.

Solutions such as drought-tolerant crop varieties, sustainable soil management practices and digital tools that empower farmers, especially smallholder farmers.

Such innovations are critical to improving productivity, building resilience, and ensuring food and nutrition security for the world’s most vulnerable communities.

Today’s webinar continues this momentum.

It highlights scalable solutions that can be adapted across countries and regions, amplifying impacts and driving the transformation of agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable.

More than 80 percent of the food we consume is plant-based, and transitioning to sustainable cropping systems by producing more with less is key to this transformation.

FAO’s work shares our collective goal of advancing sustainable cropping systems by:

One: enhancing farmers’ access to quality seeds and planting materials that are resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses;
Two: supporting farmer productivity through sustainable mechanization, efficient irrigation and improved fertilizer use; and
Three: reducing the impacts of pests and diseases, including transboundary, by integrating host plant resistance, cultural practices, and responsible pesticide use.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
On this UN Day for South-South Cooperation, let us reaffirm our commitment that no region, no country, no community and no farmer should be left behind.

The innovations of the Global South are powerful.  Our task is to scale them further, faster and more equitably.

FAO remains committed to working together with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, the CGIAR, and all partners to expand access to technologies, strengthen cooperation, and mobilize the resources needed to realize this vision.

Together, through collaboration, innovation, and solidarity, we can realize the promise of South-South Cooperation in advancing food security and sustainable agriculture for all and achieving the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life – leaving no one behind.

Thank you.
