YUGOSLAVIA - REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA 1954.
Yugoslavia, Republic of Macedonia, 1954. This photograph was taken during a six weeks' assignment carried out in Southern Yugoslavia by one of the specialists of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Mr. J. Dabell (U.K.) His visit followed a request by the Republic of Macedonia for advise on the feasibility of developing underground water resources for irrigation.
The specialist found that hydrological conditions were favourable in certain areas but that practically no equipment was available for well drilling and there were no technicians with experience of drilling large diameter wells for irrigation. The FAO Engineer, with wholehearted cooperation from local officials, selected an area for a small pilot project, improvised drilling equipment and then demonstrated its use by sinking a well 250 mm. to 30m. through sands, clay and gravel. After completing the well and testing the yield, plans were drawn up to establish a small community irrigation scheme which would allow the nearby village to cultivate about 25 hectares of mixed ferops.
The success of this cooperative venture has led the Government to repeat the project in other areas and to take steps to acquire modern drilling equipment.
