Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Eighty years ago, at the very first conference of FAO, Members were concerned about timber for post-war reconstruction.
They emphasized the need for up-to-date information on the world’s forest resources.
Today, 80 years later, these concerns have expanded to the impacts of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and the sustainable provision of all forest goods and services.
More than 5 billion people use forests for food, medicine, and to improve their livelihoods.
Over 2 billion people depend on wood and other traditional fuels for cooking.
Forests are rich in biodiversity, important for healthy diets and resilient agrifood systems.
We need up-to-date, transparent and reliable information.
This is why the Global Forest Resources Assessment is so important.
This year’s edition gathers information from almost 200 national correspondents on the status and trends of global forest resources.
In total, over 700 experts were involved in compiling, analysing, reviewing and validating the data.
I take this opportunity to thank all the contributors for their invaluable support.
The results show that deforestation continues, although declining.
And wildfires, pests, diseases and extreme weather are affecting vast lands of the forest.
The report also shows that in many parts of the world efforts to protect, restore and sustainably manage forests are increasing.
In the past 25 years, forest area has increased.
Restoring degraded forest landscapes have helped to address climate events and to ensure the sustainable development.
Using the comprehensive data in this report, we can work better together to promote the right policies and tools, build strong partnerships, and transform today’s challenges into opportunities.
Let’s do better and more in the next 25 years.
