Your Excellency the Minister Agriculture and Environment of Viet Nam,
Your Excellencies the Ministers of Agriculture from Africa, the Near East and Asia,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
1. I am honoured to open this historic high-level inter-regional knowledge and experiences exchange — the first of its kind — bringing together Africa, the Near East, and Asia to share best practices in agrifood systems transformation through FAO’s One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) initiative.
2. I am especially pleased that this exchange is taking place in Viet Nam, whose One Commune One Product programme inspired our global OCOP initiative.
3. Viet Nam’s remarkable progress in reducing poverty, improving livelihoods, and achieving food security offers valuable experiences for other regions.
4. This exchange builds on my meeting with His Excellency the Prime Minister of Viet Nam earlier this year, during which we agreed on the importance of sharing Viet Nam’s success through FAO’s South-South and Triangular Cooperation platform.
5. Today’s dialogue brings together top agriculture policymakers to learn from Viet Nam’s experience, through which over 15,500 products have been promoted, and has been a driver for sustainable rural development.
6. Through the FAO OCOP, we are now promoting more than 56 special agricultural products that contribute to the Four Betters: Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life – leaving no one behind.
7. As Africa advances its ambitious agenda for agrifood systems transformation, there is much to learn and share.
8. I am confident that this knowledge-sharing will highlight how innovation and national product branding can boost productivity, improve profitability, open new markets, and promote a better life for rural communities,
9. As well as show how Asia’s successes can inspire and support Africa’s efforts, and vice versa.
10. FAO remains committed to supporting Africa as it tackles hunger and malnutrition – in a continent where 1 in 5 people faced hunger in 2023.
11. Together, through exchanges like this, we can drive meaningful progress towards addressing hunger and malnutrition,
12. Together, we can turn Africa’s challenges into opportunities.
13. Together, we can transform agrifood systems – across all regions – to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable.
14. I wish you a successful and fruitful meeting.
15. Thank you.
