Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Friends,
It is an honour to join you to celebrate 50 years of partnership between FAO and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
A partnership built on mutual trust, fruitful technical cooperation, and a shared vision for food security and the transformation of agrifood systems.
This year also marks FAO’s 80th anniversary; eight decades dedicated to the advancement of sustainable agricultural development worldwide.
It is a moment to reflect on progress and renew our commitment.
Since 1973, FAO has been a committed partner in Bangladesh’s transformation from a food-deficit country to a leading producer of rice, fish, vegetables, and poultry.
Today, Bangladesh is the third-largest inland fish producer and fourth in global rice production - achievements made possible by strong national leadership and close collaboration with key partners.
Over five decades, FAO has supported more than 300 projects that helped cut undernourishment by half, more than doubled agricultural GDP, and lifted millions out of poverty.
Women’s participation in agriculture has also risen significantly and now make up nearly half of the rural workforce.
Together, we shaped the National Agricultural Policy, advanced the One Health approach, introduced climate-smart farming, digitized agricultural data, and pioneered key FAO initiatives like the Hand-in-Hand and Digital Villages, as well as international efforts like the Global Action for Fall Armyworm Control.
FAO has acted swiftly in major crises in Bangladesh, from floods and cyclones to displacement, to ensure emergency agricultural support reached the most vulnerable.
FAO also supported the removal of 550 tons of toxic DDT, making the environment better and reducing damage to ecosystems and wildlife.
Furthermore, FAO provided critical support to the Rohingya crisis by enhancing food security, restoring livelihoods, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
These are not just national achievements, but global contributions to global food security and sustainable development.
Dear Friends,
Congratulations to the government and the people of Bangladesh, as our valued partners, for five decades of impactful collaboration.
Together, let us continue building a food-secure, resilient, and sustainable future,
And ensuring the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life for all people in Bangladesh, the region and beyond - leaving no one behind.
Thank you.
