Background Information
The World Food Program (WFP), launched jointly in 1963 by the United Nations and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), uses food - much of it agricultural surpluses that otherwise would lie idle - to foster economic growth in developing countries. WFP, aid to Turkey comes to about $6.5 million, aiding 12 projects fundamental to the nation's development. The projects range from reclaiming blighted forests and eroded farm lands, connecting villages with secondary roads, resettling displaced families, controlling floods and soil erosion, to increasing production of fertilizer, pulp and paper products, coal and steel.
