5. SOT Rosanne Marchesich, FAO Response Team Leader (English):
The food insecurity situation in Ethiopia is quite a challenge. The latest figures show that there are 10.2 million food insecure people. These numbers have tripled since the beginning of 2015, as a result of the strong impact of the drought from El Niño.
OV: The agriculture sector is absolutely instrumental to the overall food security of the country, but also for the livelihoods and income of people. GDP is fifty percent of the agriculture sector, eighty percent of the population depend on agriculture as a source of employment.

I lost 25 goats. We lost most of our cattle.
OV: We received animal feed and hay. Some of our animals were saved because of this support.

13. SOT Oumer Beri, Breeder (Afar): But this is not enough and we need more animal feed support to save our remaining animals.

15. SOT Patrick Kormawa, FAO Sub-regional Coordinator for Eastern Africa (English): This is deadly water and people are drinking it. So, it’s not only going to affect their lives, but the diseases that go along with it, because they are drinking water from the same pond where animals defecate, where animals are drinking. So, our appeal to the international community is to support international development organization like FAO, to be able to provide safe drinking water, to be able to provide water for animals, to be able to provide water for crops, so that people can have a decent life. This is a catastrophy.

SOT Rosanne Marchesich, FAO Response Team Leader (English):
One of the activities that we are initiating now is a destocking activity with livestock. And the idea here is that we are buying cattle, sheep and goat from the most vulnerable farmers, providing them with cash and meat. So this provides stability for the income, as well as for nutritional intake, but it also reduces the stress with the environment and with the existing livestock, so they can really focus on those that are most healthy and not lose their livelihoods.

Script
The devastating drought sparked by the worst El Niño in records has driven Ethiopia to an alarming state of food insecurity and malnutrition. Water and animal feed are scarce in most parts of the country, leading to crop failures and widespread livestock deaths.
The main agricultural campaign - the meher season - is fast approaching. The window for meeting the planting season, which produces up to 85 percent of the nation’s food supplies, is limited.
There are high livestock mortality rates due to poor grazing resources, feed shortages and limited water availability in Afar and Somali Regions. This has led to sharp declines in milk and meat production – a vital source of nutrition for these communities.
Shortage of clean water is also posing a threat to human health.
The El Niño-induced drought is not just a food crisis — above all, it is a livelihood crisis.
FAO is urgently appealing for USD 13 million by the end of March for seed support – both food crop and forage seed – and provide survival feed for draught and core breeding stock to livestock-dependent households. This is part of FAO’s overall call for USD 50 million for its El Niño Response Plan for Ethiopia which remains less than 10 percent funded.
