SOT ROB VOS, FAO's Coordinator Strategic Programme on Rural Poverty Reduction (English): Over the past years, we have been to lift 150 million people out of poverty thanks to social protection. And we have also seen an enormous expansion of social protection programmes, particularly in developing countries, (which) are now reaching more than 2 billion people.

SOT ROB VOS, FAO's Coordinator Strategic Programme on Rural Poverty Reduction (English): Sustainable Development goals are about development, improving human condition, eradicating hunger, poverty... improving education, promoting gender equality, but they're also transforming all of our production and consumption in environmental more sound practices. So that will be a major challenge for agriculture, that for instance in the era of climate change... is one of the causes of climate change, producing about a third of all greenhouse gas emissions. So, if we don't start transforming agriculture now, if we don't start adapting to the threats of climate change now – because we are all going to see that particularly in Africa and in other vulnerable regions of developing countries, then we will not achieve the other goals of ending hunger and ending poverty.

SOT TEACHER: When they grow up, somebody may lose one of their parents or what, and the other one will resume the role as a father or as a mother, and to take care of other activities at home. And that is why it is very important to have them to have the knowledge.

SOT STUDENT: (We used) to eat meat and blood. Now that we have the knowledge of growing these crops, and we have learned the food crops and foot nutrition (value), have learned the protective foods that are here now... that spinach are protective foods, so they are different from blood and meat... So, these ones can protect us from diseases or illness.

Social protection is a series of policies designed to help vulnerable people around the world break the cycle of rural poverty, food and nutrition insecurity. Social protection can take many forms and can be very effective when combined with agricultural support.
