Script Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen

1. Today, we celebrate the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.
2. And this year is a special one, as it marks FAO’s 80th anniversary.
3. Over the past 15 years, FAO has increasingly been working closer with Indigenous Peoples, in recognition of their important contribution towards achieving food security.
4. With millennia of observations, experience and science, Indigenous Peoples are champions of resilience, nutrition and biodiversity.
5. Indigenous Peoples’ food and knowledge systems are also dynamic and innovative, and can find traditional solutions from the past for the modern challenges we face today.
6. I am happy to announce that in October, as part of our 80th Anniversary celebrations, FAO will once again host the annual meeting of the Global Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food and Knowledge Systems,
7. During which we will continue to work together to find new ways to bridge tradition and innovation to create new paths going forward.
8. This year’s theme of the International Day is Indigenous Peoples and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
9. AI can help preserve Indigenous Peoples’ food and knowledge systems, and help in reversing the impacts of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and land degradation, adapting to new ways of life sustainably and harmoniously.
10. But it can also be a threat, causing appropriation and exploitation of Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge, foods and genetic resources.
11. To mitigate these risks and to make AI a useful tool for Indigenous Peoples we need to:
• First: Provide them with equal access to AI technology;
• Second: Respect and implement their right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent; and
• Third: effectively and coherently include Indigenous Peoples in decision-making processes.
12. AI is at the frontline of FAO’s Science and Innovation Strategy, and FAO is focused on making it beneficial to all farmers and Indigenous Peoples, while also respecting their rights.
13. FAO will continue working with Indigenous Peoples to build a better foods-secure future for all, leaving no one behind.
14. Thank you.
