Dear friends and farmers,
the World Food Day 2024 theme
“Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future,”
reminds us that FAO has a huge mission
to ensure food security for people every day everywhere.
A Better Life is more and more dependent on food diversity
from different resources with different origins.
Promoting food diversity can improve the protection of biodiversity,
and culture diversity.
Today,
smallholder farmers and family farmers are the backbones to producing enough foods,
and to preserving traditional food cultures.
We know that around 730 million people are facing hunger
due to global challenges caused by man-made and natural disasters,
based on the 2024 SOFI Report led by FAO.
And more than 2.8 billion people in the world are unable to afford healthy diets.
There is no time to lose, we must take immediate action.
We must act together.
This World Food Day let us renew our commitment
to build more efficient, more inclusive,
more resilient and more sustainable agrifood systems
that respect everyone’s demands for varied and healthy foods.
The right to food is a basic human right.
Collective action can drive substantial change,
with global collaboration from all sectors, and all partners.
And especially the youth, because a food secure future is their right.
They design and decide their future.
The UN Summit of the Future will be determined by their actions.
Science & Innovation,
including IT, AI, Biotechnology and Digital Agriculture, among others,
will be a decisive force for agrifood systems transformation.
Together, we can honour our collective pledge
to take action for people, planet, and prosperity,
and the Four Betters:
better production,
better nutrition,
a better environment,
and a better life,
leaving no one behind.
Our Actions are our Future, and
our actions must ensure the
“Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future”.
Happy World Food Day 2024
and happy FAO birthday to you all!

Collective action across over 150 countries worldwide is what makes World Food Day one of the most celebrated days in the UN calendar. Hundreds of events and outreach activities bring together governments, businesses, civil society organizations, the media, and the public, including many young people. They promote worldwide awareness of hunger and spark action for the future of food, people and the planet.
#WorldFoodDay 2024 shines a spotlight on food as a human right. The campaign raises awareness worldwide about the need for everyone to have access to a variety of nutritious, affordable, safe, and sustainable foods. It’s time to work together and create a better, more sustainable future for all. Make World Food Day YOUR day. Join the call by organizing an event or activity and show how you are taking action. www.fao.org/world-food-day/home/en
