11 JANUARY 2024, KATHMANDU, THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NEPAL
The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, QU Dongyu, and the Honourable Beduram Bhusal, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal met on January 11 as part of the Director-General’s three-day visit to Kathmandu, Nepal.
The Minister highlighted the jointly launched Country Programming Framework (CPF) for 2023-2027, which was hailed as a landmark initiative to revolutionize agrifood systems in the country.
FAO Director-General then met the Honourable Birendra Prasad Mahato, Minister of Forests and Environment of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.
FAO Director-General QU Dongyu also attended the launch in Kathmandu of the International Policy Dialogue on Future Smart Crops, an initiative designed to unlock the potential of neglected and underutilized crop species (NUS).
The launch was also attended by the country’s Vice President, The Honourable Ram Sahya Prasad Yadav, and the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development, The Honourable Bedu Ram Bhusal.
In his opening remarks, QU emphasized the need for more and better crops, ensuring accessibility while minimizing environmental impact.
The Policy Dialogue was accompanied by an exhibition featuring 30 stalls designed to showcase a diverse array of NUS varieties, technologies, and products.

FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and The Right Honourable Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, met during the Director-General’s visit to Nepal.
The Prime Minister informed that the country was now focused on economic building and would shortly graduate from the Least Developed Country category. The Prime Minister expressed his expectation for FAO to play an even more positive role in supporting Nepal.
The Director-General emphasized the importance of agrifood systems transformation for Nepal which would be even more important after Nepal’s graduation from the Least Developed Countries group. Qu emphasized that to achieve this, it was critical to turn political will into concrete actions.
FAO Director-General QU Dongyu then met The Right Honourable Ram Chandra Paudel, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.
The President appraised FAO’s support to the country and conveyed his appreciation to the FAO Director-General for the constructive discussions held with the Ministers from Nepal who participated in the World Food Forum (WWF) in October 2023.
The President further sought the Director-General’s guidance on addressing issues related to improved education and training of farmers, retaining people in the farmlands, and making agriculture an attractive sector for careers.
FAO Director-General QU Dongyu on Friday 12 attended the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining a five-year collaborative framework between FAO and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) to promote sustainable mountain development in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region.
The MoU focuses on areas of common interest, such as sustainable and inclusive agriculture, food and nutrition security, climate change adaptation, as well as capacity building for local communities, particularly women, youth, and vulnerable groups. Both parties aim to achieve these goals through joint activities, projects, and knowledge sharing, ultimately improving the livelihoods and well-being of mountain communities in Nepal and Bhutan.
