International Symposium on Food Safety and Control
Video Message
(Opening Remarks)
By Dr QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General
27 May 2024
Dear Mr Grossi, Excellences, Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Colleagues,
1. I pleased to address this important International Symposium on Food Safety and Control.
2. The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre in Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture was founded in 1964 to advance global food security and sustainable agricultural development through the safe and appropriate application of nuclear science and technologies.
3. This visionary collaboration and our shared research laboratories are unique in the UN System.
4. FAO and IAEA have cooperated in many different areas over the past 60 years through the Joint Centre to ensure food safety and to improve capacity of food quality control
worldwide.
5. Food safety and food supply are fundamental for agrifood systems transformation.
6. The consequences of food and energy price spikes, natural and man-made disasters, the climate crisis, as well as ongoing conflicts, are significantly affecting food availability, accessibility and affordability globally.
7. During this Symposium you will be exchanging information among researchers, officials, and other key partners from developed and developing countries.
8. Nuclear technologies are very important tools for measuring, managing, and controlling
food safety, and are complimentary to the One Health approach,
9. Promoting agrifood systems transformation will benefit the economic, social and environmental effects together.
10. We need to control food safety from the start: from our soil, water, agricultural and post-harvest practices, and along the whole value chain.
11. Nuclear techniques can play a crucial role in science-based international food standards.
12. The joint FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius has been offering a platform for technical and policy consultation during the past 60 years and laid a strong base for the international benchmark of food safety and consumer protection.
13. Leveraging the remarkable synergies of the FAO/IAEA partnership, let us continue to work together for the transformation of global agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient, and more sustainable,
14. For the Four Betters: Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life, leaving no one behind.
15. I thank you and I wish you a successful Symposium.
