1. As the lead UN agency for mountains and host of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, FAO has been celebrating International Mountain Day since 2003.
2. This year’s theme “Mountain solutions for a sustainable future – innovation, adaptation and youth”, honours Indigenous Peoples, youth, women and local communities, who are the most affected by major global challenges.
3. It is also an opportunity to show that innovation can move mountains!
4. From resilient mountain agrifood systems and ecosystem restoration to the promotion of bioeconomy, mountain communities blend traditional knowledge with innovative practices to adapt to climate change.
5. Investments in digital inclusion and innovative financing for small and medium-sized enterprises in the mountainous areas are needed to improve livelihoods.
6. It is essential to empower young people to drive change through technology, education and entrepreneurship, while also valuing traditional techniques and knowledge.
Dear Colleagues,
7. I am so happy to see that outstanding efforts to find solutions to mountain challenges are being recognized in the first-ever Mountain Future Awards.
8. The three winners are true mountain champions! I commend them for their achievements.
9. We must listen to mountain people and act on their solutions to combat food insecurity, the impacts of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and socio-economic challenges,
10. And we must continue to exchange knowledge, showcase best practices and mobilize collective action.
11. By embracing innovation, adaptation, youth empowerment and collaborative approaches, we are securing the resilience of mountains and mountain peoples,
12. Through the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life – leaving no one behind.
