Ladies and Gentlemen,
1. Agrifood systems are at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development, to help achieve the interlinked goals of economic prosperity, a green environment and a healthy planet.
2. Yet, agrifood systems around the world have been facing complex challenges affecting food availability, food accessibility and food affordability.
3. The frequency and severity of shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic, climate extremes and conflicts are on the rise.
4. To address these multiple crises and meet new demands, we must transform our agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable.
5. Agribusinesses help in creating on- and off-farm employment, enhancing incomes, reducing poverty, and contributing to livelihood improvement.
6. They also provide entry points for promoting the sustainable use of natural resources.
7. By 2050, the world population will reach 9.8 billion, with about 70 percent of the population residing in urban areas.
8. Agribusinesses will play a key role in providing the quantities and quality of food and non-food agricultural products required by these rapidly expanding and urbanizing populations.
9. Agribusinesses also provide higher prospects and increased opportunities for attracting young people to agriculture than traditional farming.
10.Ladies and Gentlemen,
11.our ambitious goal to provide good food for all, today and tomorrow, will be possible only if we build the future that we want by making wise choices based on risks analysis and management.
12.At FAO, we conduct strategic foresight exercises that help us identify emerging trends and alternative future scenarios for agrifood systems.
13.Through these exercises, FAO has identified four plausible scenarios to 2050 and beyond.
14.The most undesirable scenario is the “Race to the Bottom”, which is
characterized by increased inequalities, climate change, degradation of naturalresources, and biodiversity loss, among other shortfalls.
15.The most desirable scenario is the “Trading off for Sustainability”, where agrifood systems move forward on the resilient and sustainable path of the Four Betters: Better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment, and a Better Life - leaving no one behind.
16.FAO has identified four key triggers for the transformation of agrifood systems towards this most desirable scenario.
17.One: Improved governance at all levels from the top to grassroot level.
18.Two: Increased consumer and citizen awareness.
19.Three: Better income and wealth distribution.
20.Four: Innovative technologies and approaches.
21.These four triggers require coordinated investments by both the public and the private sector, activated by suitable strategies and policies,
22.as well as proper actions, benefitting from data, science and breakthroughs in technologies to accelerate this agenda.
23.We need to invest in infrastructure, R&D facilities and in educationalprogrammes to give young people the skills they need to start new agribusinesses.
24.FAO has a long and rich history of supporting agribusiness development in developing countries, such as through:
25.FAO’s Hand-in-Hand Initiative, which is country-led and country-owned, and aims to attract financing and mobilize partnerships to support rural development and agrifood systems transformation.
26.The FAO One Country and One Priority Product programme facilitates the development of sustainable and inclusive value chains of agricultural products,
particularly for family farming and smallholder farmers.
27.Through the Agri-food Systems Transformation Accelerator programme, FAO works with other UN bodies to promote partnerships and SDG-linked investments into high-potential value chains.
28.And at COP28, FAO launched the Global Roadmap to achieve SDG2 without breaching the 1.5-degree Celsius threshold, to highlight the critical need for joint plans to eradicate hunger, while taking effective climate actions.
