Excellences,
Ladies and Gentlemen
1. Bioeconomy for food and agriculture is one of the important professional topics for FAO, as set out in our Strategic Framework 2022–31.
2. As the world faces mounting challenges – from growing poverty and hunger to resource depletion, biodiversity loss and the climate crisis - we need actions that emphasize how forests can drive a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable future.
3. FAO actively supports Members in advancing their environment friendly-economy efforts, ensuring they are tailored to national contexts.
4. FAO is also working with partners to build the Global Bioeconomy Partnership for the transformation of agrifood systems, to support the development of policies, strategies, knowledge-sharing platforms and capacity-building efforts at all levels.
5. The webinar series launched today will showcase joint action under a new theme on the Forest-based Bioeconomy Approaches to advance sustainable development through multiple efforts across science, innovation and collaboration.
6. Sustainable forest value chains are powerful engines of economic growth and providers of livelihoods, especially in rural areas.
7. FAO assessments show that the full economic impact of the forest sector contributes over 1.52 trillion US dollars to global GDP, and supports 33 million jobs.
8. Building on sustainable forest management, forest-based economy approaches provide renewable forest products and services that can drive low-carbon development and promote sustainable land use.
9. We already see groundbreaking innovations, such as engineered wood products for carbon-neutral construction, and non-wood forest products that contribute to food security, medicines and cosmetics.
10. These products can replace some non-renewable, high-carbon-footprint materials in key industries.
Dear Colleagues,
11. These discussions will explore the potential of forestry for sustainable development, and seek possible solutions for all challenges related to natural disasters.
12. I wish to thank the Governments of Austria and Finland for their support, and to all participants for your active engagement.
13. Let us continue to work together to strengthen the contribution of forests to the transformation of global agrifood systems and to ensure the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, better environment and better life – leaving no one behind.
14. Thank you.
