The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), together with the City of Rome and ATAC – the capital’s public transport company – today inaugurated the renovated lobby of the Circo Massimo metro station, located just steps away from FAO headquarters and now renamed “Circo Massimo – FAO.”
The event marked the opening of the 44th FAO Conference and the launch of celebrations for the Organization’s 80th anniversary.
The station's lobby and entrance now host installations created by local and international artists, celebrating the deep connections between food, tradition, innovation, and the environment.
Designed to honor farmers as “artists of the earth,” the works also highlight the vital contribution of food heroes who work every day to feed communities around the world.
The initiative was carried out in collaboration with ATAC and Roma Capitale, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).
Speaking to attendees at the ceremony, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu thanked the partners for their valuable support. This initiative, he said, will help promote agriculture, culture, and the work of FAO. “We still have a long way to go, but we will walk it together, in the Eternal City.”
Paolo Aielli, Director General of ATAC, thanked FAO for choosing to “adopt” the Circo Massimo station on the occasion of its 80th anniversary, celebrating sustainable agriculture and farmers. ATAC has long supported sustainability – for example, through significant efforts to renew its fleet – and collaborates with artists to enhance metro stations.
Eugenio Patanè, Councillor for Mobility of Roma Capitale, stated that citizens, commuters, and tourists will benefit from the “splendid permanent installations.”
With over 20,000 daily visitors recorded at the station, “Circo Massimo – FAO” now becomes a public platform to engage citizens, visitors, and travelers in an urban space where art, agriculture, and sustainability come together.
The event also marked the public launch of the Museum and Network for Food and Agriculture (FAO MuNe), an innovative and interactive space within the Organization’s headquarters. Dedicated to agrifood systems, agricultural history, and culinary heritage, FAO MuNe is conceived as a permanent platform for public engagement, education, and exchange. The official inauguration of FAO MuNe is scheduled for World Food Day, October 16, 2025, with the expected presence of the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
This initiative is part of a broader collaboration formalized through a new Implementing Agreement, based on the Memorandum of Understanding between FAO, the City of Rome, and MAECI.
