Background Information
This United Nations Development Programme-Special Fund (UNDP-SF) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) project has the aim of establishing and operating a Centre that will train fisheries technicians rapidly and efficiently. The 5-year, nearly $2 million project is being carried out in co-operation with Korea's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The 550-student Centre offers 6 to 12-month intensive training courses in fishing techniques, navigation and marine engines to trainees c selected from graduates of fishery colleges and vocational high schools an~ from among working fishermen. Three training vessels, two tuna long-liners and a trawler, are used for practical instruction. The Centre is Korea's largest of its kind and will become the core of the nation's fishery training system.
