Background Information Why safeguarding is important while implementing FAO projects?

Safeguarding practices are essential to ensure that FAO projects do not cause any harm to people or the environment. The FAO's Framework for Environmental and Social Management, which includes nine Environmental and Social Standards (ESS), six core principles, and two operational pillars, provides a comprehensive approach to managing risks. This framework aims to improve the effectiveness and accountability of FAO programmes, ensuring that all stakeholders have the opportunity to actively engage in project activities and raise concerns through accessible channels.

Additionally, safeguarding practices help to scale up the positive impacts of projects while ensuring compliance with UN-wide commitments and fiduciary standards set by specific resource partners. By identifying, evaluating, and managing environmental and social risks, these practices contribute to the long-term sustainability of projects and help maximize their positive contributions to communities and the environment.

Safeguarding practices not only help to amplify the positive impacts of projects and ensure alignment with UN-wide commitments and fiduciary standards set by specific resource partners but also contribute to the long-term sustainability of initiatives by identifying, evaluating, and managing environmental and social risks. In 2024, comprehensive training programmes on safeguard requirements engaged a total of 813 participants, including 216 FAO staff, 201 Third Party Monitoring (TPM) staff, 323 FAO’s Implementing Partners (IPs) staff, and 73 contractor's staff, with sessions conducted by senior safeguard staff across all eight regions of Afghanistan.
