Background Information
Afghanistan's traditional subsistence farming system is defined by net consumption and little surplus production. Farmers face challenges from climate change, increased droughts, floods, and frost, as well as smallholders' trouble reaching markets or attracting merchants due to a lack of surplus.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO) is actively engaged in implementing the Household Food and Livelihood Security (HFLS) project, generously supported by the Government of Luxembourg to promote household food security and address malnutrition and deprivation in Char Asyab, Jabal Seraj, Mohammad Agha and Qarghaee districts of Afghanistan between May 2017 to February 2025. The progress of the project thus far has been substantial, with support provided to 8 512 vulnerable and food insecure households (59 584 individuals), including 1 706 female headed households. Out of this, the project directly supported more than 1 000 vegetable producer farmers, of which 350 women during 2022 and 2023.
