Background Information Afforestation/Reforestation Initiatives in Eastern Afghanistan (Laghman Province) under GEF7 Project.

Laghman province is in eastern Afghanistan and is characterized by its stunning mountainous terrain, rangelands, and fertile valleys. Deforestation and rangeland degradation put Laghman province in a critical position.

In Afghanistan, the overexploitation of resources, linked with drought and dry-land farming, has led to significant deforestation, rangeland degradation, and watershed damage. This has resulted in severe soil erosion and a decline in soil fertility. Decades of ineffective land management have increased issues like soil degradation, flooding, and desertification, which are worsening daily.

The FAO has undertaken afforestation, reforestation, and rangeland management initiatives to restore degraded forests and rangelands. They planted 51,284 saplings of walnut, pine nut, Dedonea, and pine across 422 hectares of degraded forest land, and directly reseeded 3.75 tonnes of rain feed alfalfa seed over 188 hectares of rangelands. Additionally, 4 water reservoirs were constructed to ensure regular irrigation for the newly planted saplings.
To improve the livelihoods of local communities reliant on forest and rangeland resources, the FAO also planted 67,869 fruit saplings, including almond, peach, cherry, and orange, across 211 hectares of land as an alternative livelihood option to reduce pressure on natural resources.

The project is financially supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
