Yugoslavia, May 1964. Scenes of the damage. At 05.17 a.m. on 26 July 1963 Skopje, the capital of the Macedonian Republic in Yugoslavia was reduced to ruins in 20 seconds. About 30,000 of the 36,000 dwellings were destroyed or damaged beyond repair. Out of a population of 200,000, 170,000 were homeless, 4,000 injured and more than 1,000 dead. Almost all the public buildings, schools, factories and cultural centres were damaged or demolished. The Yugoslavs are rebuilding the town with overseas and UN assistance, among them the UN/FAO World Food Programme which sent in $1.2 million worth of protein rich food for workers rebuilding the town.
